Being a Victim of Domestic Violence Can Get You Denied for Health Insurance

A history of being abused in a domestic violence relationship can get you labeled with a “pre-existing condition” and denied for health insurance in 8 states and the District of Columbia. As the debate for better health care in America rages on, the SEIU is calling attention to this way in which health insurance draws and quarters the population and its ailments in an effort to make a buck.

I have a question: if you are a batterer, is that also a pre-existing condition, and if so, can you be denied coverage for it? I know it doesn’t incite the same moral outrage, but the fact is that domestic violence perpetrators, as well as the victims, need health care.

  1. Domestic violence perpetrators need jail,or if they really are crazy,a secure mental facility, not “community treatment”where they can get an opportunity to finish the job.
I can’t believe the first aprt of your post.I mean I believe it is true, but the rationale doesn’t exist.
I still don’t care for the SEIU,but a stopped clock is right twice a day(I say that too often).

  2. You know, we writers are a crazy bunch. Look at all the suicides (Hemingway, Plath, Hunter S. Thompson), not to mention alcohol and drug addicts (too many to list). I’m surprised they haven’t yet named creativity as a “pre-existing condition!” ;-)

  3. Psychiatrists commit suicide more often than average citizens,or so I heard. It may be apocryphal.I do believe dentists actually have a much higher than normal suicide rate.
I guess constantly inflicting pain and discomfort on one hand, and listening to peoples’ sick delusions on the other can be a factor.
