December Roses

Hope St. December 6, 2009

The first real snowfall of this year covered the trees with silver and is still sticking. Instant cold. The Winter Solstice occurs this year on December 21 at 12:47pm EST.

A question for all you horticulturalists– is it usual for roses to have a second bloom this late into the Fall?

  1. My friend Jo-Ann Langseth says this is a regular thing. I have never seen it in our neighborhood. I would imagine you would need a spot that gets a lot of sun.

  2. There’s a lot of roses in my neighborhood, but they’re wilting now in the cold. I saw forsythias blooming today off Mineral Spring Ave– just a few yellow blossoms.
It looks like the frost and the freeze has moved in. I’ll try to love it. If I hibernate I’ll be too out of shape to enjoy the spring.
