I must say I am SICK of hearing about H1N1 and the elevated numbers. I am also never going to have my child given a vaccine that contains Thirmerosal (Mercury). I always chuckle when I read the Warning: “People who have a severe (life-threatening) allergy to chicken eggs or to any other substance in the vaccine should not be vaccinated.” DA! What about allergies to Lead or Mercury…certainly these are more toxic than eggs and chicken. Very humorous in a sick way.
It is important to note that they do manufacture the vaccine without the preservative and although they are few and far in between and I have found non in RI that administer it through the shot, you can opt to have single-dose units, which do not require the use of thimerosal as a preservative. In addition, the live-attenuated version of the vaccine, which is administered intranasally (through the nose), is produced in single-units and does not contain thimerosal. We do not get the flu shots, as I want them to build their immune system and I have read a plethura of information over the years and made my decision based on the facts out there. Additionally, everyone I have met that had the flu shot at one time or another (including myself) became very sick the days following the shot. No thanks.
I got the flu shot this year because I went to one of my jobs and they offered it on the spot. I’ll get the H1N1 this month also.
In my case, the risk/benefit calculation is different, because a flu that will make me sick for a week could put one of my elderly clients in the hospital, so I have to do my best not to spread germs. My kid is in college, and can’t afford to miss a week of classes.
My experience with mostly elderly is that in 2004 when the vaccine was unavailable, they were very worried and unhappy about not getting it. Also I talked to people with chronic disease who wanted to know if I had some inside knowledge of how to get the vaccine.
I haven’t had any problem myself, had the flu many years ago and it was awful. I wish I could avoid all these colds going around. That’s where I should check into natural remedies.
