Langston Said It First

Following up on an internets rumor that Sen. Rick Santorum’s slogan, ‘Fighting to Make America Be America Again’ sounds like it was ripped-off from a poem by Langston Hughes, I arrive at Notthead, who posted the poem in its entirety. Follow that link for reviews and background on Hughes’ poem that was published in 1938, [...]

Unwisdom

Top scientists are saying that the workers who are keeping the Fukushima nuclear reactors from going critical should have their blood drawn so that there will be a stored source of their own stem cells in case they get leukemia. This plan may have merit, but there are news reports that contract workers and employees [...]

Make Yours Well-Done

Not surprisingly, what goes around, comes around. Our factory-farmed cows, pigs and chickens, stuffed with antibiotics, are reeking with drug-resistant staph bacteria. Cook it well, wash your hands, and keep the kid’s hands off it. Wipe your countertops and pay attention to what goes where. You’ll be okay. The longer view is to eat less, [...]

An Unkind Cut

According to The Phoenix, The great state of Arizona is not afraid to get personal… Before passing their so-called “birther” bill Wednesday, Arizona Republicans apparently decided it wasn’t fair to limit proof of citizenship to the “long form birth certificate.” So, they amended the measure to include several other forms of proof. One such document, [...]

Talking Point Fail

The nuclear industry lost another talking point, ‘not as bad as Chernobyl’ has been run over and flattened by events. Looking at the whole picture made it clear early on that the disaster is worse than Chernobyl. Every passing day of radioactive discharge is a problem for the future. Japan doesn’t have vast areas of [...]

Mystery House Decoded!

Following up on a helpful hint from Mangeek, (and my smart brother who had told me the same thing), I put ‘QR house, providence, ri’ on the intertubes and found the names of the perpetrators. From ProJo.com last November… Local artists this year have painted temporary murals on seven shuttered buildings as part of a [...]

Radiation Does Not Spread in Circles

That’s a quote from Greenpeace via the Irish Times. Japan has expanded the evacuation zone around its crippled nuclear plant due to high levels of radiation, as a strong aftershock hit the area exactly a month after the devastating earthquake and tsunami. A magnitude 6.6 tremor shook buildings in Tokyo and a wide swathe of [...]

Fukushima Radioactive Dumping Continues

From The West Australian… Japan fails to stop radioactive discharge into ocean Yoko Kubota and Kiyoshi Takenaka, Reuters April 10, 2011, 11:20 pm TOKYO (Reuters) – Japanese nuclear power plant operator TEPCO expects to stop pumping radioactive water into the ocean on Monday, days later than planned, a step that would help ease international concern [...]

Nuclear Gypsies and Expendable Day Labor

Today’s New York Times has testimony from Masayuki Ishizawa, a contract worker at the Fukushima Nuclear Plant, as he describes being detained in the plant during the earthquake, as the tsunami darkened the horizon… Mr. Ishizawa, who was finally allowed to leave, is not a nuclear specialist; he is not even an employee of the [...]

Anyone Know What This Is?

Driving around at work I saw this interesting paint job. The house is on a side street off Manton Ave. Is there anyone who can decode this? Is it real, or just an artistic statement? Either way, it’s cool. Reminds me of the Crayola House on the West End.
