Right Uniform–Wrong Religion

Great post from David Jaffe about service members who are fighting for their right to free speech at home. They are facing disciplinary action for appearing in an antiwar demonstration in camouflage uniforms, even though they removed their insignia. Aside from the fact that if you go to the mall even the babies are wearing camouflage, this rule about what you can do in uniform is being applied selectively. The servicemen simply made the mistake of appearing at the wrong kind of event. Here’s a blast from the past, from CNN in 2003…

WASHINGTON (AP) — Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff are defending a new deputy undersecretary of defense “who has reportedly cast the war on terror” in religious terms.
Lt. Gen. William G. Boykin, whose promotion and appointment was confirmed by the Senate in June, has said publicly that he sees the war on terrorism as a clash between Judeo-Christian values and Satan, the Los Angeles Times reported Thursday.
Appearing in dress uniform before a religious group in Oregon in June, Boykin said Islamic extremists hate the United States “because we’re a Christian nation, because our foundation and our roots are Judeo-Christians. … And the enemy is a guy named Satan.”

Although many of the President’s buddies have jumped ship, General Boykin is doing just fine. Iraq veterans might lose their benefits for exercising the freedoms they risk their lives for, but the friends of the President can do anything they want and get nothing but Christian love.
