Along with likely challenges in the near future to Roe v. Wade, Alito’s confirmation may also bring other losses for Democrats. These include: weakening of worker’s rights legislation, strengthening of corporate power, and a dampened ability for individuals to challenge breaches to their civil rights. This article, Equal Justice at Peril, succinctly connects Samuel Alito to the real world of civil liberties problems we face in the wake of his confirmation, which is looking more and more like a done deal.
From the article:
“When there is a conflict between institutions and individual rights, Judge Alito’s dissenting opinions argue against individual rights 84 percent of the time,” University of Chicago professor Cass R. Sunstein wrote in an analysis that he conducted for Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, D-Mass. In almost all of these cases, Alito dissented from a court with a majority of Republican appointees. The Knight-Ridder news organization, which reviewed 311 published Alito opinions, reached a similar conclusion. It is darned near impossible to find a case in which Alito agreed with someone who claimed mistreatment by police, or discrimination on the job, or the improper denial of pension or pay.
He is very conservative, and he is probably going to get confirmed.
I just hope that Dems get a spine and stop this, I called both Chafee and Reed yesterday, to oppose this nomination.
I just read your post on Daily Kos, and decided to see your weblog.
There are a great many reasons to oppose the nomination of Samuel Alito to the Supreme Court, from the threat he poses to established law such as Roe v. Wade to his carte blanche atttitude towards the executive branch of government. We have seen enough excesses in the last 5 years (thank you, monsieurs Bush, Cheney, Ashcroft, et al.) and do not need to swing the door even further open with the appointment of this extremist to the highest court in the land. To read more about Alito’s views and why you ought to take action now, check out the following:

If you visit the ACLU website, I encourage you to click on the link to “Tell Your Senators to Oppose Judge Alito.” Or, better yet, call their offices. The Bush leaguers would have us believe that they can wantonly stomp on our rights and needs. Prove them wrong.
Alyce,
Thanks for your comments. You’ve inspired me to do the same and call Chafee and Reed. For anyone else out there interested in making a last ditch effort, here are the numbers: Senator Lincoln D. Chafee: 202-224-2921; Senator Jack Reed: 202-224-4642
