Think Progress has put together all the charges brought against Jack Abramoff. The page also details the many people involved with Abramoff and how much money they were involved with him for. I am linking to it in memory of Martin Luther King, Jr., whose legacy of standing up for those who dream of rising out of poverty and overcoming bigotry and discrimination, are, unfortunately, further hindered by the workings of Abramoff and our many government enablers of his crimes.
The point of reading the Think Progress summary of Abramoff’s corrupt network, other than to make you feel sick every time you hear the names Ralph Reed or Roy Blunt, is to understand that this corruption caused our government to skew its agenda in favor of tax breaks for corporations, specific special interests in gambling, and deregulation of big business. The result was that on December 21, 2005, when the US government came up short on funding its budget, it went and cut $10.1 billion dollars to help poor and elderly people get access to healthcare, $12.7 billion in student loan support, and billions more in child support enforcement. These are monies which will be cut over the next 10 years.
There is a direct correlation: a decade of Republican greed and abuse of power, and now, to pay for it, a decade of lost money for worthy justice-enhancing endeavors.
one thing we need to recognize, if we are young, taxpaying and doing okay, is that these subsidies benefit us in a direct way. if our parents have medicare and social security, they have their dignity, and we are not going broke supporting them. if students can get loans, we gain an educated group of workers who will help support us someday. if our general population is more healthy, our economy benefits. if the bird flu actually comes around, we will find out what a public health system is there for, the same way you find out what a fire extinguisher if for when a blaze breaks out. hey when’s the last time we checked the fire extinguisher?
