As if our individual privacy weren’t compromised enough these days, it has come to my attention that—due to a loophole in federal law—our home and cell phone records can be purchased online by any Tom (DeLay), Dick (Cheney), or Hairy (Gorilla) willing to dole out the cash to obtain them. The Washington Post reported on this disturbing bit of news last July in an article entitled “Online Data Gets Personal: Cell Phone Records For Sale. A few weeks ago, to prove how easy it is to obtain another individual’s records, AMERICAblog went online and bought General Wesley Clark’s cell phone records for $89.95. (Contrary to a rumor that I just started, AMERICAblog did not subsequently sell the records on Ebay for $6.99.) In an effort to correct this compromising loophole in the law, the fine folks at MoveOn.org have begun a petition drive to encourage our Congressional representatives to “pass a law that strictly prohibits these unauthorized sales and begin enforcing this law now. I encourage you to log on to their website and add your name.
