Our First Trolls

I knew it would happen eventually. The trolls have arrived. First we have Big D, hailing all the way from the big T (Texas) where he likes to play with his big G (gun). Then we have Rightri, hailing all the way from somewhere else in Rhode Island.

I visited your website, Big D, and duly noted the many pictures of people and monkeys shooting guns. I also noticed in your comments that things disintegrated into name-calling pretty fast. We don’t do that here. Your posts will be published only if they are kept free of viciousness and obscenity.

I have visited your website many times, Rightri, since I like to keep informed on how the right is justifying its political corruption, its war in Iraq, or niggly little economic details like the fact that wages in this country continue to decline when inflation is factored in. Of note on this, you are a Rhode Island school teacher, a rare professional who has probably not seen a marked decline in wages or benefits like the rest of us. I’m a school certified social worker, though I have yet to get a job in a Rhode Island school, and with the increases in cuts for education spending planned by the Bush administration, I probably won’t be getting one anytime soon.

Rightri, on your blog and on others, you have been a big defender of clean, respectful speech, though you do refer to libs as moonbats, a slur almost as popular these days as Nazi comparisons. Taming the Tongue is something I also believe in, though, like most humans, I am prone to inaccuracy, stupidity, and ignorance. But at least I’m aware of this and try to actively combat it by researching my assertions and (most of the time) carefully contemplating my words.

So perhaps, Rightri, between this and our shared interest in the education of children, we will have a tiny ice floe of common ground to stand on in the globally-warming sea of political rhetoric.

  1. Ouch. I thought you were interested in having political dialogue (thus the comment section). I’ve been visiting your site since someone from here left a comment on mine. And I enjoy reading it, although obviously disagree often. I didn’t realize posting alternative ideas would constitute trolling, which is generally considered rude comments meant to disrupt discussion.

I was hoping this would be a more congenial alternative to RIFuture. Your comments above, particularly your Bible reference, make it clear that despite some of our common interests, we won’t be having much future political discussion. This “troll” won’t bother you again.

  2. yeah i got some comments from those dudes too since i found both of you in the same search about chavez. BIg D pretty much makes me realize why most folks hate Texas and he epitomizes what the left leaning folks in the US can’t stand about the hard core right. No where did I engage in any name calling, but i was called an “a**hole” and had my comment edited immediately. real classy. i guess when your message doesnt hold up, you attack the messenger. maybe there is a good reason we have gun control laws…

  3. Sorry to offend you with the trolls reference, Rightri. It was a bit of hyperbole, I admit. I was using the term to refer to people who come to a blog and post comments for the sake of invoking argument, which is not a bad thing in my opinion. So I don’t have the same definition in my head of “trolls” and I went to great length in the rest of the post to note that you seem to be on the side of civil discourse, as am I. But, to be honest, it seems that this is probably the direction things would have gone anyway, and we just essentially hastened the process.
