• BURNT TOAST to Senator Conrad Burns of Montana, who seems to rather enjoy the taste of his foot in his mouth. On Wednesday, First Lady Laura Bush was kind enough to stop by to campaign for the Senator, who faces a tough reelection bid. During the campaign event, Mr. Burns “talked about the war on terrorism, saying a ‘faceless enemy’ of terrorists ‘drive taxi cabs in the daytime and kill at night.’â€? Not surprisingly, faceless cab drivers everywhere were up in arms about the Senator’s unfounded accusation. As were Guatemalan house painters the last time Mr. Burns chanced to open his big mouth. more…
• BURNT TOAST to Governor Mitt Romney of Massachusetts for his muddled use of hyperbole in expressing opposition to certain types of stem cell research, which he termed “Orwellian.â€? (Literary critics might disagree with that analogy.) He also warned that “it crosses a very bright moral line to take sperm and egg in the laboratory and start creating human life.â€? Gee, isn’t that basically the definition of in-vitro fertilization, a widely-accepted procedure to assist couples unable to conceive? Is the Stormin’ Mormon opposed to IVF, too? more…
• BURNT TOAST to conservative pundit Ann Coulter for her recent essay, “They Shot the Wrong Lincoln,â€? in which she makes like a cobra and attacks Rhode Island Senator Lincoln Chafee—who is up for reelection this year—for essentially not being conservative enough to suit her. In a shrill tone, she describes the Senator as “a half-witâ€? and “dysfunctional and illiterate.â€? Well, it’s hard to argue with such persuasive and reasonable exposition. more…
• BURNT TOAST to Las Vegas Mayor Oscar B. Goodman who declared Wednesday to be “Paris Hilton Dayâ€? in the city of sin. Did he realize he was honoring a woman of great wealth and ego but little talent to speak of rather than a four-star hotel in France? more…
While I disagree with Mr. Romney’s position, I’m not quite sure I’d agree with giving him burnt toast for the comments he made.
His position seems to be consistant with his Conservative views. As an ethical matter, he looks at why embryos are created. From his perspective, creating embryos (via invitro fertilization) for the sake of creating a living human being is acceptable. The by-product (unused embryos) can then be used for altruistic scientific purposes.
But mass-producing human lives (that is how he and his Conservative ilk view embryos) for the purpose of harvesting their parts is viewed as Orwellian. Few folks would fail to be mortified at the concept of harvesting parts from human children or adults. For those who hold the belief that an embryo IS a human and is endowed by their creator with the same rights as a child or adult, there is no difference. Arguing that it isn’t a human is fruitless.
So while while some perceive Romney’s comments as “muddled use of hyperbole”, they are comments that would seem to be consistant with Conservative view that human life begins at conception. In that context, growing little humans for the sake of harvesting is indeed Orwellian.
