Social Workers Help Veterans Adjust to Being Home

This month’s newsletter from the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) offers a story on the organization’s use of print advertisements to promote the valuable work being performed by social workers every day in this country. According to the NASW, the latest ad—which can be seen in the current issue of O, the Oprah Magazine—“features Rick Selig, a licensed social worker who counsels veterans in his private practice in Topeka, Kan. Selig is a specialist in trauma and stress who helps veterans adjust their reactions from living on high alert to living everyday life. The story of his work with Army National Guard Specialist Chuck Ross, who is also featured in the ad, is told in detail…on the social work consumer Web site, ‘Help Starts Here.’ â€? That article, entitled “Stress Management Real Life Story – Veterans and Combat Stress,â€? is worth reading. The ad can be seen below:

  1. Impressive advertising….in the sense that I’m not conviced the public are really aware of the range of skills held by social workers.
