According to this article in MSNBC, Bush’s only ally in resisting the Kyoto agreement, Prime Minister John Howard of Australia, is expressing willingness to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. From the article:
SYDNEY, Australia – Australia’s leader said Tuesday he wants to consider an international carbon trading system to fight global warming, signaling a shift toward a part of the Kyoto agreement that he has steadfastly refused to ratify.
Prime Minister John Howard, who has recently made global warming part of the mainstream debate in Australia after years of playing down the issue, said he would be willing to consider the trading system to limit greenhouse gas emissions — if it does not harm key resource-dependent industries.
“It’s in Australia’s national interest to play a part in reducing greenhouse gas emissions but in a way that doesn’t damage our vital industries, such as the coal industry, said Howard, a U.S. ally whose objections to the Kyoto agreement previously echoed those of President Bush.
One would hope this would mean that the U.S. will finally be forced to comply with Kyoto and do its part to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Since election night, I have this new sensation that I have not felt in over six years. I think it is call “optimism”. Does anyone else feel it?
Shocking really that Australia was alone on the island with the USA on this issue in the first place. Bush’s lame duck status is encouraging others like Howard and Blair to break with him on issues like this and the Middle East…

I think this might be the only time that Howard breaks with Bush on important issues. Howard will rectify this in the near future.
In my opinion, of the trio Blair is the only one with credibility. Whether one agrees with him or not he has a brain!
