Also of interest regarding concrete plants is a movie to be aired on PBS on November 28, 2006 called “Two Square Miles.” The film chronicles the fight of the community of Hudson, New York, to keep a huge cement plant from encroaching on their quality of life. From the trailer, it sounds like this was a true grassroots community movement that was successful. The rank-and-file people of Hudson organized, rose up, and said, “We’re keeping our small town. You’re not going to turn us into an industrial wasteland.” So should it be as well here in Cranston.

  1. If you missed the 53-minmute PBS broadcast, a DVD of the “director’s cut” (93 minutes, i.e. 40 minutes longer) is available for just 20 bucks from the filmmakers:

    This is a more nuanced and complex portrait of Hudson during the years of the cement plant controversy than the PBS version.
