Some months ago, I wrote a piece—entitled “In Pursuit of the Beast“—in which I took the Bush administration to task for its detention and treatment of so-called “enemy combatants” at Guantánamo Bay. I cited the case of one detainee, Murat Kurnaz, who was held for more than four years before being deemed innocent and granted his release. In a way, he was among the fortunate, for others remain unnecessarily and illegally confined at Guantánamo.
