If the following news article from the Associated Press is even half true, I hope that the offending flight attendant loses her job and the airline is sued. What is wrong with some people?
Mother says her baby’s talking got them kicked off of airplane
ATLANTA — The mother of a 19-month-old boy says she and her son were kicked off a plane after she refused a flight attendant’s request to medicate her son to keep him from talking.
Kate Penland, who lives in Gwinnett County in suburban Atlanta, said she and her son, Garren, had boarded the Continental Express plane last month after an 11-hour delay in Houston on an Atlanta-to-Oklahoma flight.
Garren kept saying, “Bye bye, plane,” Penland recalled. And she said the flight attendant objected.
“At the end of her speech, she leaned over the gentleman beside me and said, ‘It’s not funny anymore. You need to shut your baby up,'” Penland told WSB-TV in Atlanta.
When Penland asked the woman if she was kidding, she said the flight attendant replied, “You know, it’s called baby Benadryl.”
“And I said, ‘Well, I’m not going to drug my child so you have a pleasant flight,'” Penland told the TV station.
Penland said other passengers began speaking up on her behalf, and the flight attendant announced they were turning around and that Penland and Garren were going to be taken off the plane.
“I was crying, I was upset and I was thinking, ‘What am I going to do? I don’t have anything with me, I don’t have anymore diapers for the baby, no juice, no milk,” Penland said.
The young mother said she later learned the flight attendant told the pilot that she had threatened her. Penland said that never happened. [full text]
Wow, having an almost 21-month old myself, I find this all too believable. It is nearly impossible to stop them from talking — they’ve only figured out how to do it recently.. The little guy was just trying to express that he didn’t want to be on the plane or he wanted to the plane to go. Poor mom. Sounds like the flight attendant was the one who needed some Benadryl, or perhaps a vacation. Regardless, her behavior sounds inexcusable.
Tell continental what you think-this is crazy! Their toll free number is 800.932.2732.
Anyone who flies Continental and Continental Express knows the level of politeness from the flight attendants is extremely poor. I am not surprised by this. As a frequent traveller who used to fly Continental, I think the extremely low pay they offer their people creates a poor workplace atmosphere and lowers the quality of the hiring pool.
Did someone noticed that the flight was 11 hours late. I would be repeating myself over and over again if I was in that flight. Poor boy, I can only imagine. Shame on you continental for not sending out a PR note saying that you fired the attendant right away and apolgise for what happened.
