Study Says Grapefruit Linked to Breast Cancer

The many pieces to the puzzle of preventing breast cancer:

A study of 50,000 post-menopausal women found eating just a quarter of a grapefruit daily raised the risk by up to 30%.

The fruit is thought to boost levels of oestrogen – the hormone associated with a higher risk of the disease, the British Journal of Cancer reported.

But the researchers and other experts said more research was still needed. [full text]

More research is needed, but if I were a grapefruit-eating woman, I would definitely consider taking this food out of my diet.

    Could you provide a source for your assertion? Was the study flawed? Please let us know what indicates that the study is “meaningless.”

  2. I’ve read enough studies that i’m skeptical of the version that gets into the news. Still, 50,000 is a pretty good sample size. Grapefruit interacts with some prescription drugs because it affects the ability to metabolize them. I’m overweight, menopausal, and have been eating a lot of grapefruit in an attempt to lose weight. It hasn’t worked. Maybe I’ll try the cabbage soup diet instead.
