And on the local front of the lead paint war zone for children, The Sierra Club is threatening to sue Rhode Island Novelty for lead paint on their products. From the Projo:
The Childhood Lead Action Project in Providence announced Friday afternoon that Rhode Island Novelty is one of 11 companies the Sierra Club is threatening to sue for allegedly failing to abide by federal lead-hazard notification requirements associated with some of its toy or jewelry products.
The suit threat follows two voluntary toy recalls in the last year by Rhode Island Novelty through the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). In December, the company recalled 48,000 “Powerpuff Girls necklaces. In March, it recalled 47,000 “Mood Necklaces. Both jewelry items were recalled for having high levels of lead, which is toxic if ingested by young children.
In April, the Sierra Club and the Environmental Protection Agency reached a settlement under which the EPA agreed to take certain regulatory steps to safeguard children from toxic toys. The EPA then advised more than 120 companies who had problems with lead-tainted products, including Rhode Island Novelty, to be vigilant against the production, importation and distribution of consumer products that contain toxic substances. GIVE THEM A BREAK! THEY HAVE RECALLED THE ITEMS. I HAVE ORDERED FROM THIS COMPANY FOR OUR SCHOOLS FALL FESTIVAL FOR SEVERAL YEARS. I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN VERY HAPPY WITH THE PRIZES, THE PRICES AND THE PERSONAL SERVICE.
THE REAL QUESTION HERE SHOULD BE WHY IS A CHILD EATING SOMETHING THAT IS NOT FOOD. THE ITEMS ARE MEANT FOR OLDER CHILDREN THAT DON’T PUT THING IN THEIR MOUTH. WHY DON’T WE USE THE MONEY THAT THESE LAWYERS ARE BEING PAID TO BETTER OUR SCHOOLS SO THAT PARENTS SUCH AS MYSELF DON’T HAVE TO FUNDRAISE SO MUCH!
