Schwarzenegger Vows to Fight for Universal Health Care

“If I have to crawl around on all fours through the Capitol, it makes no difference to me. I just want to get it done.” — Arnold Schwarzenegger, speaking before a round-table of reporters on health care reform

I’m not exactly sure why Arnold Schwarzenegger would need to crawl around on all fours to get support for better health care on Capitol Hill, but I’m glad to hear that he is committed to making health care coverage as universal as possible. From the San Jose Mercury News:

SACRAMENTO—Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger came out against the Democrats’ health reform bill on Wednesday, telling a newspaper he would veto it if it relied solely on businesses for funding.
Democrats have rejected a key feature of the governor’s health reform proposal—requiring everyone to have insurance. Instead, they want businesses to pay most of the cost of expanding coverage to millions of uninsured Californians.

Schwarzenegger made his remarks Wednesday to the Sacramento Bee’s editorial board, later softening them somewhat in a capital round-table interview with reporters.

But on both occasions, he said that by excluding the mandate on individuals to buy insurance and rejecting other features of his plan, the Democrats were taking too narrow an approach. [full text]

  1. Hello All,

I have returned from two weeks in Europe. I was amazed by the common sense viewpoint of European nations toward universal healthcare. The UK’s NHS is as important and vital to the people as are the police, fire and school systems are.

  2. Universal Health Care and all other elements of a tax funded institutionalised welfare state should be accessible by all citizens at no additional cost. In 2007, one should not have to be concerned by sudden unemployment or sickness. Furthermore, it seems to me to be a basic right for people to have access to free education (including University) in the interests of Social Justice.

Western countries are flush with wealth so it is clearly not a problem of finding funds, just the will to do so.
