Tiverton Teachers: “We Want to Be Teaching”

This is 2.5 minutes of footage of this morning’s strike in Tiverton, Rhode Island where teachers and their supporters carried signs saying “School Board — Do your Job” and “1.5 Years No Contract” and the confusing “First it was the Easter Bunny — Now Teachers and Students.” If someone can explain the joke to me there, I’d appreciate it.

Anyway, my sympathies to the community going through all this. You are actors in a larger drama, it seems, being performed to convince the General Assembly to change the formula for school funding.

  1. What I want to know is why Bob Walsh was with Sheldon Whitehouse today protesting the war in Iraq. It seems to me that Bob Walsh should be in Tiverton and/or Burrillville, helping to resolve the contract negotiations so our kids can get back to being educated.

  2. Kiersten,
How soon they forget! The Easter Bunny fiasco surfaced in regards to a Spring fair that a school was holding in Tiverton. A school committee member objected to the bun-bun as being a religious symbol. So, presto-chango Peter Rabbit made his appearance. This made the nat’l news. The religious conservatives loved it while everyone else thought this guy (& the committee who supported him) were full of (jelly) beans!
In regards to the previous commenter, perhaps if we weren’t funding a trillion dollar war,we’d have the necessary monies to invest in our schools; hence the war protest as Whitehouse returns to D.C.

  3. It wounds me that the one acknowledgement of my Pagan heritage–the Easter Bunny, was cruelly banished from the public space. How are we going to teach our young people about fertility without the great example of the rabbit?
