Job Summary
The Mental Health Association of Rhode Island seeks an energetic, imaginative, compassionate, intelligent, well-spoken, and thoughtful individual to lead the Association through the next phase of its history.
The Association is a 92 year old organization devoted to promoting mental health, preventing mental illness, and improving care for mental health through advocacy, education and service. Pursuant to its strategic plan, the Association’s particular focus in the near term is on advocacy and the Executive Director’s immediate task is to identify and obtain new and/or increased financial support from philanthropic organizations, individual donors, and government grants and contracts. The Executive Director ensures that all funds raised are spent and accounted for in accordance with the Association’s mission and in conformance with all relevant laws and regulations.
The Executive Director also acts as the principal public representative of the Association, coordinating the Association’s public relations efforts, and maintaining relationships with and, under the direction of the Board, coordinating efforts with the Rhode Island Coalition for Mental Health, the Mental Health Consumer Advocates of Rhode Island, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, the Parent Support Network of Rhode Island, the Rhode Island Coalition for the Homeless, the Rhode Island Council of Community Mental Health Organizations, the Governor’s Council on Behavioral Health, and the Association’s national affiliate, Mental Health America.
The Executive Director also manages the day to day operations of the Association, which includes but is not limited to supervising a small staff, maintaining the organization’s personnel and fiscal records, and coordinating a variety of volunteer tasks with the Board of Directors.
Qualifications:
The Executive Director must be able to work creatively under pressure; address detailed, complex problems, balance multiple tasks during the course of a day, and meet deadlines.
The Executive Director must be able to maintain a flexible work schedule sometimes involving long hours and irregular schedules. Some evening and weekend activities are a normal part of the job.
The successful candidate will have a record of successful nonprofit organization or business management experience that demonstrates she or he is someone who is committed to achieving positive results; is able to work with a diverse population, can lead an organization through change and can motivate others.
