Steve Stycos on Plans for 24-Hour CVS in Edgewood and Other News

School Committee member Steve Stycos sent the following update:

NEIGHBORS OPPOSE CVS AT NORWOOD & BROAD

CVS is planning to build a new 24 hour store at the corner of Broad Street and Norwood Avenue in Cranston. Workers at Rocky’s and Rite Aide will be looking for jobs as they have been given notice to vacate the premises. Only property owners within a 200’ radius of this site were notified of the CVS proposal.

Neighbors oppose a CVS as they feel it will greatly affect the quality of life in Edgewood by increasing traffic in our peaceful neighborhood. Recent traffic studies show excessive speed on both Norwood and Broad will require “traffic calming” measures.

Please help oppose a new building by emailing Mjsimas@verizon.net.

The first neighborhood meeting to discuss this proposed CVS will be Monday, 4/12/10 at St. Paul School at 7:30 P.M.

First meeting before the Cranston Site Plan Review Committee on the plan will be at Cranston City Hall, 3rd Floor Council Chambers Wed., 4/14/10, at 9:00 A.M.

PAWTUXET RIVER NEEDS YOUR HELP

Friends of the Pawtuxet will hold a clean-up Saturday April 17 at 9:30 AM at the DEM Supply Depot on Warwick Avenue in Cranston. The site is just across the river from Shaw’s.
The flood waters left rolls of plastic pipe, tires and bottles strewn throughout the woods. Plastic bags, however, are the most common litter. This is a great chance to clean up a natural area and see the effects of the 100 year flood before the greenery hides it.
Children are welcome. Boots recommended. Stay for as long as you want. For more information contact Steve Stycos at 461-2618 or reply to this email.

FARMERS NEED BUCKETS

Farmers at Urban Edge Farm, including Pawtuxet Village Farmers Market regulars Chang Xiong, Christina Dedora and Michele Kozloski need five gallon buckets to support pallets in their greenhouse. They do not have to be food grade buckets. If you have buckets to donate, please drop them on the porch at 37 Ferncrest Avenue, Cranston.

WOOD ASH

Steve Stycos needs wood ash, a good source of potassium, for West Bay Community Action’s West Bay Farm which grows vegetables for its food pantry. Please reply to this email or call 461-2618, if you have a large quantity of clean wood ash. Please no ash from plywood, furniture or other chemical containing wood products.

CRANSTON SCHOOL FORUM

The parent group BASICS is sponsoring a open public forum on Cranston’s schools, Monday April 12 at 7 PM at the Cranston High School West Auditorium. Members of the school committee and city council will be present.

See you at the first farmers market, Saturday May 8, from 9-12 at Rhodes in the Pawtuxet.
