Farmer’s Market and Updates from Steve Stycos

From Steve Stycos:

MARKET IN FULL SWING

The Pawtuxet Village Farmers Market hits full stride Saturday. The Xiongs of Pak Express will have nim chow and their great collection of greens. Zephyr Farm will have eggs and summer squash. The Fratantuonos, who thank market customers for their support of the book sale, will have home made preserves, tomatoes and strawberries. Also we will have cut flowers from Christina Dedora, baked goods from Palmieri’s bakery, interesting plants from Wedgewood Flowers, roasted nuts (try the cashews) from the Virginia and Spanish Peanut Company and prepared appetizers from Mazie’s Organics. And Buttonwoods Bathworks will be back. Bernie Bieder, whose birthday is Sunday, will also be at the market with his honey.

We expect Mike Dahlquist of Long Entry Farm and Barden Family Orchard to join the market sometime this month.

Attendance at last Saturday’s market was excellent. Thanks to all who attended. Meanwhile, our berry box reuse program has hit the 1000 box mark for this year. Thanks to those who wash and return their boxes. Please remember we only use pint and quart boxes.

CANOE TRIP FULL

Friends of the Pawtuxet’s July 10 canoeing trip on the river is full thanks to sign-ups for ExploreCranston. We need canoes for July 10. If you can lend your canoe for the day, please respond to this email or call Steve Stycos at 461-2618.

We will have another canoe trip in the October.

LAND DEAL

The Cranston City Council’s Ordinance Committee reversed itself and withdrew a zone change which could have created 150 half acre house lots in western Cranston. The West Bay Land Trust and Save Cranston’s Open Space sounded the alarm and when voters from both the eastern and western sides of the city packed City Council Chambers to protest, the committee rescinded its earlier unanimous vote.

See you Saturday at the market.

  1. Aren’t farmer’s markets for local small producers. That nut company sure isn’t a mom and pop operation.
I’m not saying this in a necessarily negative way, just wondering what the parameters are for inclusion,if any?

  2. The Virginia & Spanish Peanut Co. is a family-owned business in Providence, and a Buy Local RI partner of Farm Fresh RI: http://www.farmfresh.org/food/member.php?fn=610
The honey used in their peanut butter is all RI produced and their booth at the market is staffed by the members of the ownership family.

The parameters for vendors at our market is that there is some connection to locally harvested products, that there is local ownership and production, and that there is customer demand for the vendor’s products not being filled by our current vendors.

The PVFM’s main goal is to provide fresh food to our community and to support our farmers. By offering a variety of locally produced foodstuffs, we draw more customers to the market to ensure that our farmers sell enough of their produce to remain viable growers. We also strive to increase our customer base (and keep the conversations about the importance of connecting with our food and our environment) by offering cooking demonstrations, composting workshops, nature walks, informational booths and other events throughout the season.

Come down and meet our great farmers!
