Local Farm and River Day in Cranston

If tomorrow shapes up to be anything like today, this will be a great event. It’s not scheduled to rain until later in the day tomorrow, so come out and enjoy the outdoors while you can:

FARM & RIVER DAY AND STRAWBERRIES

Strawberries, swiss chard, and hot house tomatoes and cucumbers will be available when the Pawtuxet Village Farmers’ Market officially opens Saturday 6/16/07 with a wide variety of vegetables. Micki Whelan of Baby Greens will join the market for the first time with her bags of tasty mixed greens and homemade soaps, while Peter Fratantuano of Moosup River Farm will have the season’s first local strawberries, chard, basil, scallions, peas and all the necessary ingredients for salads.

In addition, Saturday is officially Farm & River Day with canoe rentals and a group hike along the Pawtuxet River. Canoes can be rented for an hour at 9, 10 and 11 AM. We supply the paddles, preservers and the boat and then you paddle the calm picturesque river for an hour. If you have not taken this trip you will be surprised by the natural beauty on the river, including birds, muskrats and turtles. Spots are still available. For reservations, email Hillary Fifer at hkfifer@cox.net, or call her at 784-8240. Steve Stycos will also lead a walk along the Pawtuxet River trail. We will meet in the lower Rhodes on the Pawtuxet parking lot at 10 AM. Everyone is welcome. The hike is only three flat miles, but we recommend buying your vegetables first in case we get back around noon. Originally Rod Rodrigues was scheduled to give the walk, but he is participating in the Edgewood Garden Club tours Saturday. Rod has compiled a photo exhibit of wildflowers which can be viewed at www.friendsofthepawtuxet.org. Click on “Enter” and then on “flora.”

Finally, our berry box recycling campaign should premier Saturday. We have collected 353 quart boxes for strawberries. Each box will have a new Pawtuxet Village farmers market recycling label on top of the commercial label. Please return your quart boxes (and pint and half pint boxes) to Annemarie Bruun at the market. All of us recyclers are making a difference. See you Saturday at the market from 9 to noon on Rhodes Place, just off Broad Street in Pawtuxet Village.
