That Was Fast

MONTPELIER, Vt. – Vermont on Tuesday became the fourth state to legalize gay marriage — and the first to do so with a legislature’s vote.
The House recorded a dramatic 100-49 vote, the minimum needed, to override Gov. Jim Douglas’ veto. Its vote followed a much easier override vote in the Senate, which rebuffed the Republican governor with a vote of 23-5.

Vermont was the first state to legalize civil unions for same-sex couples and joins Connecticut, Massachusetts and Iowa in giving gays the right to marry. (more)

With a couple of months to spare for a June wedding. Cool.

  1. This is quite remarkable, also it seems more and more heteros have either softened their positions on this, or signed on to help gays gain rights.
My good friend prariepond must be overjoyed.
I can’t wait till she gets some time off of her paid writing gig to write a blog post.

    1. Add to this our own struggle here in RI, including this video of RI Future blogger and NEA Asst. Exec Dir Pat Crowley crashing a National Organization for Marriage press conference today at the state house:

Hopefully this will all get straightened out (no pun intended!) sometime soon and we will become another state to legalize same sex unions.

  2. About those hetero tolerant folks.
I get my comments deleted on blogs where religion is the topic. I guess they stop by my webpage long enough to figure out we support gay rights and tolerance, and….wooosh……bye bye comments!

  3. we at Kmareka appreciate your comments. there were several speakers at the marriage hearings in rhode island who pointed out that the ‘three major religions who condemn gay marriage’ don’t include conservative and reform jews or many christian denominations. the religious right is loud, but they are not a majority.

  4. Obvously I’ve gotten to like you folks here.
I know you post a lot about your own area’s issues, I was wondering if you would be intersted in me placing a blogroll link on our site. I ask because not only is it polite, but will generate some traffic and commenting, and I don’t want that to be considered distracting fom your own issues like local schools etc.
I will not in anyway be offended if you do not want a link. I did a small blog for years and did not want much traffic.
If you just like to visit and comment, please stop in to our daily post “Public Square”, we’re such a damned social bunch that we could never stay on topic, thus the daily gossip thread!
