When the British were occupying our shores, insurgents patriots committed an act of van patriotism. That’s the spirit of the ‘Gaspee Tea Party’, and there’s Governor Carcieri on the front page of today’s Providence Journal, giving double victory signs like that great Republican, Richard Nixon.
I don’t know how he comes out the hero in all this. He’s late in his second term, never did the ‘Big Audit’, and Rhode Island is worse off than the other New England states. Things are tough all over, but electing a businessman has not helped us. He can’t fire Providence and give East Greenwich a raise, so he’ll just have to keep on governing all the people.
The problem with business executives is that they tend to be very thin-skinned and very intolerant of contrary opinions.
There is a phenomenon in the corporate world where bad mews does not rise above a certsin level. Why? Because if you disagree with a plan, you are marked as “not a team player.” If you point out obvious problems with a point of view, or an idea, you are labeled ‘negative.’
In short, you take your career in your hands if you dare speak out.
As a result, big bosses all to often are blissfully unaware of the havoc their latest scheme is wreaking with the folks who actually have to do the work.
Then, when thinkgs get so muddled, the Big Boss will spend Big Bucks to bring in an outside consultant to give bad advice. They do this instead of listening to their staff, who could give much better advice for free.
You see this with The Donald. You saw it with Bush. Bush was absolutely flabbergasted when people didn’t agree with him. He wasn’t used to it.
