Guns and the Elderly

A tragic story from MSNBC…

LAGUNA WOODS, Calif. – California authorities say a 90-year-old man will likely be booked on a murder charge after he shot his bedridden wife, allegedly to end her suffering, then tried to kill himself.

My latest home care nursing journal has a case study of a depressed elderly widower, a veteran, who had a nursing/mental health team working with him. They suspected he was suicidal and had the means to kill himself. Eventually he handed over three loaded guns because he didn’t trust himself with them.

It’s a worry. Guns, depression, confusion are a bad mix. There’s lots of dangerous junk in old people’s homes.
