Sen. Whitehouse Hosts Community Dinner at Cranston Senior Center

For those who want to talk to Sen. Whitehouse and learn more about government assistance for recovery from the flooding, here is the information on the community dinner in Cranston this Sunday, May 16:

Ever since the severe flooding occurred in March, I have been visiting the hardest hit areas, and working with local, state, and federal officials to ensure that Rhode Islanders get the assistance they need during this difficult time. I have seen firsthand the hardships Rhode Islanders are facing in the aftermath of the worst flooding our state has seen in 200 years, and I’m doing everything I can to help.

With that in mind, I’d like to invite you to bring your family and friends and join me for a free macaroni and meatball community dinner to share your personal stories regarding flooding in your neighborhood, and to speak with representatives of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the Small Business Administration (SBA), and the Rhode Island Emergency Management Agency (RIEMA) directly.

When: Sunday, May 16, 2010, 6:00 p.m.

Where: Cranston Senior Center
1070 Cranston Street, Cranston

I’d also like to use this opportunity to remind you that the deadline to apply for federal disaster relief is fast approaching. Rhode Islanders have until May 28 to register with FEMA and complete the Small Business Administration loan application. As you may know, the SBA has partnered with FEMA to provide low interest loans to individual homeowners, not just businesses. In addition to registering with FEMA for assistance, it is very important that you also fill out an SBA loan application as it may increase the benefits you receive. Filling out the SBA loan application will not obligate you to accept a loan, and completing this important form may also make applicants eligible for additional “Other Needs Assistance” benefits offered through FEMA, or other supplemental assistance Congress may be able to provide.

This free event is open to all Rhode Islanders. If you would like to RSVP, or would like additional information, please visit my website at http://whitehouse.senate.gov/services/dinners, call 401-453-5294, or e-mail rsvp_whitehouse@whitehouse.senate.gov. RSVPs are encouraged, but not required and the event is first come, first served. In order to make sure everyone can see, banners and posters will not be allowed into the event.

I hope to see you on the 16th!

  1. My natural disaster has to do with too little water, not too much, but I wanted to write from half a continent away and say that Sheldon Whitehouse seems to be one of the most articulate and morally centered people in the Senate today. Rhode Islanders should be proud.
