Religion Hall of Shame

Josh Bunting at Alternet had better wear a lightning-proof vest, because he has made a list of the five worst religious groups.

Being a liberal, he has ecumenically included Christians, Hindus and Muslims in his list. These believers are doing unto others, but not in a good way.

A common response to criticisms of religion is that its adherents can sometimes do good things, even if it’s for irrational reasons. That’s fair enough, but at the same time it’s useful to remember that while some good can be mixed in with the bad, sometimes religions create institutions of pure evil. Here are a few of them:

I’m going to obey the 8th commandment, thou shalt not steal, and direct you to AlterNet, here.

  1. Nancy-are you so desparate that you go trolling for the most extreme scum imaginable and try to extrapolate from that?
I think the Westboro folks are right in there.
There will always be those on the outer edges(or over the edge)of sanity.proves nothing except those people are who they are.
I think organized religion and clergy are two things I don’t need in my life. However,I don’t feel the need to run down religions- if people find comfort there, good for them as long as they refrain from peddling it to me or acting like they’re more moral and upright than me because they profess piety.
Anyhow,I wonder if you are going to call people bigots if they oppose same sex marriage because they have a conviction that it’s wrong?

    1. Joe, I am–

      1. not desperate
      2. not calling anyone a bigot, at least not in this post.
Some of my best friends are religious. Even Jesus and the prophets had things to say about bad people who use religion as a cover. It’s been going on for a long time.
I think this post mentions the Lord’s Resistance Army, in Uganda, which is a criminal gang.
If you think I’m putting them in the same category as that nice church on the corner of Rochambeau you are really not reading what I’m writing.

      1. Furthermore, good religious people who oppose same sex marriage should definately marry the opposite sex. And they should deny church weddings to anyone they please. And they should stop trying to make the state conform to their religious restrictions.

  2. BTW I heard some clips from a Code Pink rally(I left 920 on after Helen Glover’s show and Glenn Beck played it.I also saw a segment of it on tv.
Talk about hate speech!!Of course there’s no such thing on the left according to “klaus”.

  3. OK Nancy-let me save you the time of having to sit for hours in a stuffy hearing room and endure hours of hot air and maybe seeing Chris Young ejected and Kara droning on and on.
Here’s what’ll happen-the bill will get to the floor, amd it’ll be defeated,OR if it passes,Bucky Beaver(Paiva-Weed) will block it in the Senate.
OR the GA will defer it to a referendum in 2012 where it will lose big. Why?Because in an off year, almost no one would bother to vote on it,except interested parties.
In a presidential election year, eveyone will come out and most people don’t want same sex marriage.
Hopefully Obama will be sent packing back to Chicago and “Rev.”Wright’s hall of hate.

  4. thank you for the concern trolling. I’ll be there anyway. It’s a kind of religious thing to stand up for what I think is right, especially in the USA where all it will cost me is a few hours of my time.
