The Plot Thickens

Today’s New York Times reports that Murdoch News of the World lieutenant Rebekah Brooks has been arrested.

A police statement did not identify her by name but said a 43-year-old woman had been detained for questioning by officers investigating both the phone-hacking scandal and payments made to corrupt police officers. A News International official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, confirmed that Ms. Brooks had been arrested.

Britain’s Press Association news agency said she was arrested by appointment at a London police station at approximately midday and remains in custody.

Hacking, bribery and maybe some blackmail? The Darth Vader of Murdoch’s Media Empire might have to defend her paper’s tactics in getting the story cheap and dirty.

I don’t think a corporation is a person, or a conglomeration is a family– though they like to describe themselves that way. Fox News is showing a kind of family loyalty by soft-peddling this story. If they share the corporate culture of News of the World then Fox deserves a closer look.

UPDATE: The London Chief of Police has resigned for doing nothing wrong except hiring a former executive from News of the World to guard the henhouse do publicity for the force..

  1. A closer look at Fox?Sure,Nancy, right after a closer look at the NY Times and NBC and their affiliate,MSNBC,and maybe CBS for sanitiizing news about Obama and Holder and totally ignoring actual news that appears on Fox.
I suspect the real hope of you progressives is to shut down any news outlet critical of your agenda.
We’re not talking about opinion shows here.Rachel Maddow and Sean Hannity aren’t news providers.
BTW MSNBC has been featuring Al Sharpton,a racist,anti-semitic scumbag who has blood on his hands from his days as a racial provocateur in NY(Crown Heights riots and Freddie’s).
If you don’t remember Freddie’s look it up.
He’s cleaned up his act for public consumption, but he’s not fooling anyone with a functioning mind.
Did you fall for the Tawana Brawley fraud?A lot of people did simply because they wanted it to be true.

  2. suppose Fox is not only reporting the news, but creating it– as in their political commentators like Glen Beck pumping up the Tea Party? How about the soft censorship of downplaying the British hacking scandal? How about paying content providers, like Sarah Palin and Newt Gingrich, who are also running for president– or threatening to?
    should we look away?

  3. Roger Ailes has been pretty clear about not letting announced candidates having jobs at Fox.
    Has Palin announced?
    Are you okay with Sharpton?
When I talk about Fox News I’m speaking the news show, not Glenn Beck.He can rev up anyone he wants to.He’s not a news reporter.
Shepard Smith is Fox’s main news anchor and he’s pretty good at what he does.
Katie Couric has prwctically been an operative for the Obama administration. How about that?
Look,we’re never going to agree on this,so why argue?
I just have the feeling that if you progressives ever got substantial power, there would be no dissenting voices allowed in the media.
I don’t think most of the American people share your views.
Certainly not those of some people who post here-maybe they’ve had a relatively narrow exposure to who lives in this country.
One of the best things about being in the service is that wherever you’re from, you find out real quick that’s it’s not the be all and end all.
It’s hard to get a good perspective from a home office or the faculty lounge.
