WHJJ Sent me an Email!

UPDATE: Check this out at Daily Kos for what happens if you read the FCC regulations and exercise your right to place a comment in the public file each station needs to keep. Also, bloggers report that local stations are running a lot of unpaid public service announcements during Rush Limbaugh.

Dear Kmareka Readers,
I normally go for months hardly aware Rush Limbaugh exists except when I visit my Mom, but these days the blog posts just about write themselves. Here’s a nice letter I got from Bill George at WHJJ. If Mr. George is this tolerant and easily satisfied in general, he must be a super-mellow guy…

Thank you for your feedback regarding Rush Limbaugh. 920 WHJJ is committed to providing its listeners with access to a broad range of opinion and commentary without condoning or agreeing with the opinions, comments or attempts at humor expressed by on-air talent. The contraception debate is one that sparks strong emotion and opinions on both sides of the issue. We respect the right of Mr. Limbaugh, as well as the rights of those who disagree with him, to express those opinions.

920 WHJJ is satisfied with Mr. Limbaugh’s apology to Ms Fluke, regarding the wording of his statements. We hope that our listeners will join us in accepting that his apology is sincere and appropriate.

Here is the text of Rush’s apology, issued on Saturday:

“For over 20 years, I have illustrated the absurd with absurdity, three hours a day, five days a week. In this instance, I chose the wrong words in my analogy of the situation. I did not mean a personal attack on Ms. Fluke.

I think it is absolutely absurd that during these very serious political times, we are discussing personal sexual recreational activities before members of Congress. I personally do not agree that American citizens should pay for these social activities. What happened to personal responsibility and accountability? Where do we draw the line? If this is accepted as the norm, what will follow? Will we be debating if taxpayers should pay for new sneakers for all students that are interested in running to keep fit? In my monologue, I posited that it is not our business whatsoever to know what is going on in anyone’s bedroom nor do I think it is a topic that should reach a Presidential level.

My choice of words was not the best, and in the attempt to be humorous, I created a national stir. I sincerely apologize to Ms. Fluke for the insulting word choices.”

My reply—

Dear Mr. George,

WHJJ is very easily satisfied. This ‘apology’ mis-represents the debate and fudges what Mr.Limbaugh said. He seems to feel very sorry for himself, but not sorry that he called a young woman a ‘prostitute’ on your radio station, among others. This language is actionable, also it’s the kind of slur that endangers women. I don’t know if your station provides health insurance to employees, but maybe you should hold an audit to make sure you’re not paying for any ‘recreational sexual activities’.

I’m waiting for an audit of who is paying to sponsor this show. There are many Rhode Islanders waiting to share our broad range of opinion with them.

Best Wishes,
Nancy Green, RN

I’m always amused at people who make their careers with words, and then act like words don’t matter. It’s possible that WHJJ would happily broadcast 3 hours of static if it paid the bills, but I’m not so sure. Rush Limbaugh attracts advertisers, it remains to be seen whether he can also drive them away.

WHJJ helpfully sent this contact information. When I get home from work I will post about Clear Channel, a huge radio network with an interesting history.
