Conservatives Call Krispy Kreme Offer “Insensitive”

It appears the conservative group, The American Life League, isn’t able to handle the fact that “freedom of choice” is a phrase that can apply to many things other than the cause that they are vehemently trying to stamp out. From the Miami New Times:

Krispy Kreme, being the genial purveyor of glazed goodness that it is, decided to get in on the Obama inauguration craze and is offering one free doughnut to every costumer on January 20, Inauguration day, and released this seemingly innocuous press release:

“Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, Inc. (NYSE: KKD) is honoring American’s sense of pride and freedom of choice on Inauguration Day, by offering a free doughnut of choice to every customer on this historic day, Jan. 20. By doing so, participating Krispy Kreme stores nationwide are making an oath to tasty goodies — just another reminder of how oh-so-sweet ‘free’ can be.”

Well, The American Life League noticed the liberal use of the word choice and decided to blast the chain bakery for producing abortion doughnuts.

“The unfortunate reality of a post-Roe v. Wade America is that ‘choice’ is synonymous with abortion access, and celebration of ‘freedom of choice’ is a tacit endorsement of abortion rights on demand,” the group’s president, Judie Brown said in a statement.

It’s not a big important story, but it seems to indicate a certain lack of awareness on the part of some single-cause zealots that the rest of the world exists and uses words for purposes other than taunting them.

  1. Ok, just when you thought that we were safe from the loony right, along comes the American Life League. Glad to know there’s some consistency in life.

I went to the ALL website and found it quite interesting. Links to the appropriate articles are:

They really don’t like that “freedom of choice” language. Apparently, CEO of Krispy Kreme, Jim Morgan, is according to the ALL website, very “pro-life” (as opposed to “pro-death”?) and immediately went after that bad ad agency that initiated the freedom of choice campaign. Of course, one has to wonder how a CEO wouldn’t at least be acquainted with a major ad campaign, but that’s another matter.

On the other hand, Barak Obama is described as, “…one of the most radical pro-abortion politicians ever elected president.” I guess Judie Brown didn’t get the memo on the post-partisan politics.

There are some other gems on the ALL homepage. Judie has a neat “article” entitled “FEMINIST SEEDS OF MISERY”. Boy, that’s subtle. And, if one is so inclined, you can render financial support to “The Pill Kills Billboard – NY State” campaign. Opportunity abounds!

Anyway, back to the language, I have one question. Would the American Life League (as opposed to the radical “non-American Life League”?) ban Milton Friedman’s classic, Free To Choose? Will book stores that sell this book be harangued or boycotted?

Hey! What’s good from Krispy Kreme is good for Borders, Barns & Noble, and all independent book stores. While we’re stifling language, we might as well go to the source.

  2. I joined the AARP for one year because some Republicans accused them of being a pro-gay organization. They are, in the sense that they stand for the rights of older people regardless of sexual preference. When they took a stand that benefited unmarried couples, they didn’t explicitly exclude gays.
I only wish that Krispy Kreme donuts were not so fattening.

  3. I didn’t know what the American Life League was before reading this. From the title, and then from reading the Krispy Kreme release, I was thinking that they might have been talking about sexual politics, rather than abortion politics.

    Oh, those crazy conservatives… 😉

  4. Just remember: these are the same people who don’t know that Hawaii is part of the US, who thought it heinous that Obama pronounced “Pakistan” correctly, and tried, desperately, to smear Obama with the Blagojevich scandal in Ill.

They have no shame, no scruples, and will lie, twist, and distort to further their own ends.
